But men are offended when someone appears to do God’s business and still is only a man. They want messengers who speak more brilliantly, heralds who preach more persuasively, hearts that burn with a hotter flame. They would gladly receive God’s representative, provided he always had the upper hand, had an answer for everything, could handle every problem. But what is the terrible and hapy truth? Those who come are weak men, who live in fear and trembling, men who themselves must pray over and over, “Lord I believe, help my unbelief!” men who themselves must keep beating their breasts, “Lord, be merciful to me, a sinner!”

And still they preach the faith that conquers the world and bring the grace that makes redeemed saints our of lost sinners. God sends men. They come and through their poor humanity they say, “Look, it is the likes of us that God takes pity on. Look, the star of grace has risen for the poor and the stupid, the desperate and the dying.” As the human messengers of the everlasting God, they say, “Do not be scandalized at us. We know that we carry God’s treasure in vessels of clay; we know that our shadow keeps darkening God’s light, which we ought to bring to you. Be merciful towards us; do not judge us; feel sympathy and us weaklings, on whose shoulders God has loaded more grace than we can carry. You can take this as a promise for yourselves, the fact that we too are men. From it learn that God has no horror of human beings. You will someday feel horror and be shocked ay yourselves, when you experience in yourselves what man is and what is in man. Blessed will you be then, those of you who have not been scandalized at the man in the priest. He is human so that you can believe that man –poor real man – can possess the grace of God.” (Karl Rahner)

St. Bernadette’s has an urgent need for more ushers. If you are willing to serve in this ministry, please call the Rectory and leave your name and telephone number. Someone will contact you shortly.

If you have arranged to have a mass offered on a Sunday and you would like to carry the gifts to the altar at the Offertory, please inform the ushers upon your arrival at church so they know where you are seated and they will not pick someone else. Please help us to avoid embarrassment and hard feelings. If we do not know where you are seated, the ushers will select two other people.

We remind parishioners that the New Directions for Receiving Holy Communion are to be followed. When you are the next person to receive, you are asked to make a bow of your head in reverence to the Blessed Sacrament. When it is your turn to receive let the host be placed on the palm of your hand, step aside, and with your free hand pick up the host and consume it.

Parish Registration – We ask all new parishioners to stop by the rectory and register their families. If you are not registered and using your weekly envelopes we cannot issue letters in connection with sponsorship for Sacraments or give recommendations for positions, schools, etc. When moving out of the parish, please notify the rectory

Reminder – When you are reading the bulletin this week, take some time to look at the names of the many advertisers that support our church. These businesses show their support by advertising in our Sunday bulletin. We should return the favor by letting them know how much we appreciate it. When you are shopping or looking for a business – look to our advertiser pages and let them know where you saw their ad and be sure to thank them for their support.

Prayer for Vocations – Loving God, you chose Jesus as your beloved servant to bring justice to the world. Through baptism you also call us to be your chosen servants. Show us the path to follow and be with us on our journey. May your Spirit guide women and men to serve the church. Bless us with your grace now and forever. Amen.

The Shrine Church of St. Bernadette Adult Choir – If you enjoy praising god through song, consider joining our choir. We sing at the 11:00 AM Mass on Sunday and meet weekly for rehearsal on Tuesday at 8:00 PM. There is a need for all voices, especially tenors, baritones and basses.

A Simple Way to Show Support for St. Bernadette School – Our Internet shopping mall offers a chance for you and your family to support St. Bernadette School when you do your online shopping. We have partnered with hundreds Internet merchants to develop a secure shopping environment. You pay the same price, as you would otherwise, and up to 15% of your purchase can go to St. Bernadette School. Please keep us in mind whenever you do your online shopping. Visit our website at www.stbernadetteschool.onecause.com.

A Special Request – Parishioners are asked not to leave Mass before the priest exits the church. While it is sometimes but not always necessary for some parishioners to leave Mass early, all should plan to stay until the end of the Mass. This is a mark of respect for the liturgy and, above all, for the Blessed Sacrament received in Holy Communion. A good rule to follow is Mass is over when the priest leaves the church. Please also avoid talking socially in church. We all need a place where we can be silent with God for prayer and meditation. Thank you for keeping our church a place of reverence.

Year For Priests June 19, 2009 – June 19, 2010 Pope Benedict XVI declared a Year For Priests in an effort to foster within priests a yearning for “spiritual perfection:” During this Jubilee Year, the Pope will also proclaim St. John Vianney to be patron saint of all the world’s priests. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the death of this 19th century saint who represents a “true example of a priest at the service of the flock of Christ.” While St. Bernadette’s has already done much to pray and encourage vocations, watch the bulletin for further news of how we will be celebrating this very special year. In the meantime, in your charity, include a special remembrance of all priests in your daily prayers. Be sure to include your parish priests, but also priests who are closed to you (The one who baptized you, the one you frequently go to for confession, the priest who officiated at your marriage, etc.). God will reward your spiritual generosity for his consecrated ministers of word and sacrament. As you pray for priests, remember also the seminarians of our diocese who are already answering God’s call. They count on your spiritual support. Finally, be sure to include a prayer that vocations to priesthood and religious life may come from our own beloved St. Bernadette’s!

Why do we celebrate such a day? Does the Church invite Her faithful to make a a kind of first installment of the laurels to a young man who has not yet done anything else but offer God his heart and his life, when actually it is only the completed sacrifice that ought to be celebrated? No, we are not honoring any man. We are honoring only the priesthood fo Jesus Christ. We are honoring the Church, the entire Church of all those redeemed, made holy, and called to eternal life. We are honoring Her to whom we all belong, whether we are priests or “merely” believers and sanctified. For we are all knit so closely into one body that the grace, dignity, or power that comes to one man graces and lifts all the other, and in one man’s being called to service we glimpse the holy dignity of all. When Paul in the Epistle to the Hebrews speaks of the priest, the first thing he says is that he is taken from among men. So much so that even the eternal high priest Jesus Christ wanted to be born of a women, subject to the law, and pilgrim through the valley of this transitory world, the Son of Man, a man, making himself like us in everything. The priest is a man. He is not made from another kind of clay than the rest of us. He is your brother. He continues to share the lot of man after the hand of God has rested on him in the form of the bishop’s hand. The lot of the weak and the weary, the lot of the discouraged, the unsuccessful, and the sinner. (Karl Rahner)

· As the people redeemed in Jesus Christ, we offer the sacrifice of the new covenant on the altars of our Church. More that this we cannot do, even on the most special occasions. For there is no greater deed than this, and there is no way in which its value can really be increased: the Lord of ages becaomes present in our midst—He who is the heart of the world, and whose act of love moves the stars and takes up everything with Him into the glory of God. And yet on the day of a priest’s first Mass we do offer the everlasting thanksgiving prayer in a special way. For we celebrate the hour when a man, consecrated to be a priest of Jesus Christ, performs for the first time the act which is noble, Godlike monotony he is to perform every day for the rest of his life, until his life is finally consumed in that sacrifice that he daily celebrates and in whose acceptance alone all earthly reality sees itself accepted before the infinite majesty of God (Karl Rahner)
· Attention Married Couples – On February 14th there will be a special blessing for married couples at the 11:00 Mass to be followed by light refreshments in the Gymnasium. All married couples are invited to attend and celebrate the beautiful sacrament of marriage.

More than ever before, the people of God need to love their priests, support and encourage them, pray and offer sacrifices for them every day. They should beg God to protect them from evil, keep them in the fullness of the truth of the faith and fill them with contemplative prayer. The people of God must help raise a new generation of zealous young priests for the “new evangelization” through the daily praying of the rosary for vocations. Saint John Vianney’s beautiful statement on the priesthood is worth our serious consideration: “the priest continues the work of redemption here on earth…If we really understood the priest on earth, we would die, not of fright but of love…The priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus.” (CCC#1589)(Fr. Fred Miller)

Today, more than ever, it’s critically important to instill an unshakeable faith and hope for the future in your child. In St. Bernadette School, children grow spiritually and develop a personal connection to God that will serve them for a lifetime. St. Bernadette School provides unique quality through a faith-based education that supports the whole child in learning about the leading a fulfilled life. Your child will be challenged at St. Bernadette School – challenged to grow academically, spiritually, and as an individual. SBS students, in turn, will set the trend to a brighter future through service and leadership in their families, communities, church , and businesses. Give your child a strong foundation for a lifetime of confidence, faith, and service. Enroll your child in a National Blue Ribbon School, a Middle States Accredited School – ST. BERNADETTE SCHOOL!! Call: 718-236-1560 today.

Give the Gift of Education – Be an angel to a student! As an angel, you enable a student, who is at-risk financially, to remain in his or her Catholic school. 100% of your contribution is directed to the tuition, with the parents or guardians contributing their part. Your tax-deductible contributions can be made in honor or in memory of someone you hold dear, while assisting a child who might not otherwise be able to afford the benefit that a Catholic school education offers. For further information, please contact St. Bernadette School principal, Sr. Joan at 718-236-1560 or e-mail her at stbernadette83@yahoo.com. You may also contact the Futures in Education at 718-965-7340 or find further information at www.furtersineducation.org.

Save our Catholic Schools – Are you a Catholic School Alumni or friend of Catholic schools? Interested in saving our schools? Join Regis Philbin and thousands of Catholic school veterans to create a new future for our Catholic schools. It’s about time we STAND UP! Visit www.clickyes.com!

St. Bernadette’s has an urgent need for more ushers. If you are willing to serve in this ministry, please call the Rectory and leave your name and telephone number. Someone will contact you shortly.

If you have arranged to have a mass offered on a Sunday and you would like to carry the gifts to the altar at the Offertory, please inform the ushers upon your arrival at church so they know where you are seated and they will not pick someone else . Please help us to avoid embarrassment and hard feelings. If we do not know where you are seated, the ushers will select two other people.

We remind parishioners that the New Directions for Receiving Holy Communion are to be followed .

When moving out of the parish, please notify the rectory.

Save the Date – The Altar Rosary Society will be sponsoring a Day of Prayer – “Preparing for Lent” on Saturday, February 13, 2009 at St. Bernadette Church, Msgr. Thomas G.
Because of his intimate association with Christ, the “great high priest,” the priesthood entails a great dignity and grave responsibility. It is not east to be a good priest. Holy Orders demands great sacrifice and generosity. The priest is a vulnerable human being who often feels the burden of his weakness. The Letter to the HebrewsCatechism of the Catholic Church also refers to this sobering truth: The presence of Christ in the minister is not to be understood as if the latter were preserved from all human weaknesses, the spirit of domination, error, even sin. The power of the Holy Spirit does not guarantee all acts of ministers in the same way. While this guarantee extends to the sacraments, so that even the minister’s sin cannot impede the fruit of grace, in many other acts the minister leaves human traces that are not always signs of fidelity to the Gospel and consequently can harm the apostolic fruitfulness of the Church (CCC#1550). (Fr. Fred Miller)

For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness, Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people” (Heb. 5:1-3) The century saint who represents a “true example of a priest at the service of the flock of Christ.” While St.

· The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds priests that they are ordained for humble service of God’s people. The catechism uses a scriptural image to envision the priest: He is called to be a “slave of Jesus Christ.” Intrinsically linked to the sacramental nature of ecclesial ministry is its character as service. Entirely dependent on Christ who gives mission and authority, ministers are truly “slaves of Christ.” (Rom. 1-1) in the image of him who freely took “the form of a slave” (Phil. 2:7) for us. Because the word and grace of which they are ministers are not their own, but are given to them by Christ for the sake of others, they must freely become the slave of all (CF. 1 Cor. 9:19) (CCC#876)(Fr. Fred Miller)

Everyone should be able to see Jesus living and acting in his priest, serving the needs of all through his ordained minister. In a significant way, Christ wants to love the poor and the unloved, the sick and the dying, the victims of injustice and hatred through the pastoral care His priest give to the people of God. As a result of his deep, sacramental union with Christ, the priest’s personal trials and sufferings are meant to be particularly efficious in the lives of his people. How mysteriously and wonderfully Christ relives His redeeming passion in the lives of His holy priests! Pope John Paul II stated that the priest, Maximilian Kolbe, is the “patron of our difficult century.” When asked by the commandant at Auschwitz why he wanted to give up his life for a stranger, St. Maximilian responded, “Because I am a Catholic priest,” (Fr. Fred Miller)

Beginning on Thursday October 1st, there will be more frequent opportunity for confession here at St. Bernadette’s. A priest will be available for confession from Monday through Saturday for twenty minutes before each morning Mass. Confessions will be heard on Saturdays as usual from 1:00-2:00 PM and from 4:30-5:20 before the evening Mass. All are encouraged to take advantage of these added opportunities for confession. Please spread the word among family, friends and neighbors.

When moving out of the parish, please notify the rectory.

· Throughout the priest’s administration of the sacraments, the people of God have direct access to the priestly mediation of Our Lord. In Baptism, the priest pours water and recites the words, “I baptize you in the name of the Father…” and the baptized person meets Christ in the mystery of His death and resurrection. Through the simple act of the priest, the baptized person, dying to sin and rising with Christ to share in the divine life through sanctifying grace, is “born again” into the life of the kingdom. His work of regenerating the human race through preaching the faith and administering Baptism is the origin of the priest’s title of “Father.” When the faith full confess their sins to the priest, Christ reconciles them with His Father through the words of absolution. The priest does not say, “Christ absolves you,” Rather Christ acting in and through His ordained priest says “I absolve you from your sins.” In the sacrament of the Annointing of the Sick, Christ Himself comforts and heals those who are physically or mentally ill through the anointing administered by His priest.(Fr. Fred Miller)
· Flower Club: The Flower Club of St. Bernadette is now accepting donations for the Christmas decorations of our church. The offering is $25.00 per plant and may be brought to the rectory from Monday through Friday during the usual office hours. At the end of the year, we will publish a list of donors and you will be remembered in the Masses and prayers of the parish during the Christmas season. Personal acknowledgments of your contribution will also be sent. In this time of rising costs, the parish counts, even more, on your generosity to continue our tradition of a beautifully decorated church in which to celebrate the birth of our Savior.
· H1N1 Flu – I view of the upcoming flu season, Bishop DiMarzio has requested that all parishes cease communion from the cup (i.e,, receiving the Precious Blood) for the congregation until further notice. Parishioners are also reminded, if you are not feeling well, to refrain from offering the sign of peace with a handshake to those around you. While we all have a serious obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and days of obligation, it has always been the teaching of the church that, in cases of genuine illness, an individual is exempt from that obligation.
· Give the Gift of Education – Be an angel to a student! You may also contact the Futures in Education at 718-965-7340 or find further information at www.furturesineducation.org.
· St. Bernadette’s has an urgent need for more ushers. If you are willing to serve in this ministry, please call the Rectory and leave your name and telephone number. Someone will contact you shortly.
· If you have arranged to have a mass offered on a Sunday and you would like to carry the gifts to the altar at the Offertory, please inform the ushers upon your arrival at church so they know where you are seated and they will not pick someone else. Please help us to avoid embarrassment and hard feelings. If we do not know where you are seated, the ushers will select two other people.
· We remind parishioners that the New Directions for Receiving Holy Communion are to be followed. When you are the next person to receive, you are asked to make a bow of your head in reverence to the Blessed Sacrament. When it is your turn to receive let the host be placed on the palm of your hand, step aside, and with your free hand pick up the host and consume it.
· Parish Registration – We ask all new parishioners to stop by the rectory and register their families. If you are not registered and using your weekly envelopes we cannot issue letters in connection with sponsorship for Sacraments or give recommendations for positions, schools, etc. When moving out of the parish, please notify the rectory.
· Reminder – When you are reading the bulletin this week, take some time to look at the names of the many advertisers that support our church. These businesses show their support by advertising in our Sunday bulletin. We should return the favor by letting them know how much we appreciate it. When you are shopping or looking for a business – look to our advertiser pages and let them know where you saw their ad and be sure to thank them for their support.
· Prayer for Vocations – Loving God, you chose Jesus as your beloved servant to bring justice to the world. Through baptism you also call us to be your chosen servants. Show us the path to follow and be with us on our journey. May your Spirit guide women and men to serve the church. Bless us with your grace now and forever. Amen.
· The Shrine Church of St.
· A Simple Way to Show Support for St.
· A Special Request – Parishioners are asked not to leave Mass before the priest exits the church.
· Year For Priests June 19, 2009 – June 19, 2010 Pope Benedict XVI declared a Year For Priests in an effort to foster within priests a yearning for “spiritual perfection:” During this Jubilee Year, the Pope will also proclaim St.
Caserta will be the presenter for the day. Look for the flyer in the rear of the church within the coming weeks. The cost of the day will be $10.00, beverages and snacks provided, bring a brown bag lunch.

To share in Jesus’ priesthood is a very special grace from God. The Letter to the Hebrews states that there must be a “Call,” a “vocation” before a man attempts to approach the altar: “One does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was” (Heb. 5:4), Through ordination, the priest is empowered to be a true “mediator” who places the people of the Church in immediate saving relationship with the priesthood of Christ: “For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins” (Heb. 5:1). In other words, the ordained minister exists solely to mediate the word and the grace of Jesus Christ. (Fr. Fred Miller)

When moving out of the parish, please notify the rectory.

Amen.

· The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “Ordination confers a gift of the Holy Spirit that allows the exercise of a “sacred power, which can come only from Christ Himself through His Church “ (CCC, #1538). This “sacred Power” is Christ’s gift to His Church. Its foundation and source is the “spiritual character” or “seal” that is the immediate effect wrought by the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of Holy Orders. This sacred seal configures the priest to Christ and empowers him to ast “in the person of Christ,” the head of the Church. It is exclusively at the service of people directly to the great high priest, the author of salvation. Bishops experience the fullest share in the priesthood fo Christ. In each diocese, the bishop, through Episcopal ordination and his communion with the Holy Father and the college of bishops, mediates the saving grace of Christ to the faithful. He is the teacher, priest and pastor par excellence. To serve the needs of his local church, the bishop ordains priests and deacons to help him in his ministry of teaching, sanctifying and shepherding the people of God. In his pamphlet I shall concentrate on priests who are the privileged coworkers of the bishops. (Fr. Fred Miller)
· Through the generosity of parishioner, Ed & Beverly Slomka, a beautiful prayer book for the year of the priest has been made available to parishioners of St. Bernadette’s. The book contains some very meaningful prayers and thoughts about the priesthood designed to help Catholics pray for priests during this historic year. They are available without charge at the rectory on a strictly first come first served basis. Anyone who wishes a copy of the book should stop at the rectory Monday – Friday from 9:00-12:00; 1:00-4:00 and 6:00-9:00. the parish is very grateful to Ed & Beverly for their generous gift that will enhance our prayer for priests this year.
· Beginning on Thursday October 1st, there will be more frequent opportunity for confession here at St.
· Give the Gift of Education – Be an angel to a student! You may also contact the Futures in Education at 718-965-7340 or find further information at www.furturesineducation.org.
